red white & blue

rew white and blue accessories

Is there a reason that I am always running around trying to find something to wear for every holiday?!
I always seem to have nothing to wear, I know that there are plenty of things hanging in my closet but I never feel as if there is anything festive enough.  The easiest way to add some festive pieces is with accessories...

I have realized that there are so many holidays where red is a key color: Christmas, Valentines Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, etc... red accessories can easily make an outfit.  Start with a dress, chambray shirt, denim, or basic of your choice and add red shoes, a purse, or scarf - it is honestly that easy... blue is a staple color and works well in all seasons because it complements a variety of tones.  Pair a blue purse with warm tones for a pop of color or vibrant tones to color block.  Even break the rules and pair blue with black.  As for white, its a no brainier.  Although the color may not stay flawless for as long as we would like it adds an instant chic factor to any look.  Wear white jewelry daily or style a pair of white wedges with a colorful dress for a night out.

Holidays do not require an entire new outfit, with key items and festive accessories creating a look for special occasions can be so simple.

simple summer skirt

6/30/15

skirt - H&M | bracelet - Gorjana via Rocksbox | sandals - Old Navy | necklaces - Nordstrom Rack

Summer time is the best time for simple pieces.  The weather is right and it is appropriate to simply wear a tank and skirt with no other layer!  To add some dimension to my outfits on days that the weather is not welcoming of another layer I layer some jewles.  Jewelry is the easiest way to add layers without adding extra fabric.

Start with a simple outfit - shirt and skirt, skirt and shorts, even a simple dress
Focus on one area - choose necklaces, bracelets, or earrings to keep the look effortless
Add layers, textures, even color until satisfied!

My favorite pieces to layer right now are gold necklaces because they pair well with everything, and can be worn in as many combinations as needed.

sunset slush

dress - No Rest For Bridget | vest - Old Navy (old) | shoes - Old Navy | scarf - Zara | gold cross bracelet - Gorjana | ladder bracelet - BaubleBar

I do not really have much time to enjoy the summer.  Most of the time I am working, and the rest of the time it is usually raining... ok, ok I get a few nice days off here and there but not as many as I would like.  If I could, I would spend the entire summer at the beach.  I would rotate swimwear and my main worry would be what flavor slush to choose, if only life were that simple.  I should not be complaining, I love my job and most of the time I am there more than I need to be but when the summer rolls around I would kill to wake up and have nowhere to be & nothing to do.

End rant.

On to the outfit - stripes, an olive vest, and lace up sandals
1. I can get away with this outfit at work (with a little added attention to my hair)
2. This dress may double as a nighty (it is so soft)
3. These sandals were around $20 and I am all for a good bargain (and anything blush)

now go enjoy a slush, or an ice cream...

sentimental closet

6/24/15

dress - Old Navy | shoes - Tory Burch Outlet (similar) | jacket - Gap (old- similar) | purse - Rebecca Minkoff | sunglasses - Ray Ban

There are some items in my closet that I have had for longer than I can remember.  I don't remember when this olive jacket found its way into my closet but I will tell you its one of my most worn items.  There is something great about an unusual neutral jacket.  This one is lightweight and a great length for jeans or a dress.  It also has great pockets for a casual look (and for places you don't want to bring your purse).  This floral dress is a new addition to my closet.  I loved the large pattern and the colors that can easily transition into fall.  Its important to think of all the chances for items when adding them into your closet.  This one works with sandals and a denim jacket, heels with a light blazer, and even sneakers if you really want to dress it down.

I have had so many memories in this jacket I don't think I could ever part with it.  Its strange how some clothing holds sentimental value.  I feel like it is a part of my story.  I often do not remember memories until I put on an item that I was wearing when it happened.  Is it strange to have a bond with an inanimate object?  My clothes are the version of a security blanket, or memory box... the only difference is that mine hang on a hanger and can be taken into public, unlike a blankey (unless you cut a piece off and put it in your wallet - don't worry I will not drop any names).

Kay's Kitchen : Egg Scramble

6/23/15

Im back to pretending I can cook...  I mean I can cook, just not as well as I would like.  I am trying to eat better.  By trying I mean I will eat well all day and then treat myself to an ice-cream every night - but that is another thing I will work on.  I love breakfast, it is easily the best meal of the day simply because I wake up so hungry.  I am not the best at eating breakfast everyday but when I do I try to make it as filling as possible.  I love eggs and make sure that I add some extra veggies to increase the nutritions.  This egg scramble is the easiest because it is quick, thoughtless, and works with whatever you like.

ingredients: (you can add anything you would like)
3/4 eggs - depending on how hungry you are
peppers - or another veggie (mushrooms, spinach, eggplant)
cheese - the shredded cheese works the best but again, use what you prefer

Step one: place as many eggs as you would like in a bowl and beat them until the yolk and white is combined (i usually only add one yolk because they are high in cholesterol) cook the eggs until they are no longer runny.
Step two: add veggies of your choice and make sure to lower the temterature so that your eggs don't burn.  Simmer the eggs and veggies until fully cooked.
Step three: add cheese of your liking and  cover until the cheese fully melts.

errands couture

6/17/15

shorts - Old Navy (they come in any color you could possibly need) | sweatshirt - Loft/ Lou & Gray | espadrilles - Old Navy | sunglasses - Ray Ban | handbag - Rebecca Minkoff (discontinued color)

Now that I'm into this short wearing business, I wear them whenever I can.  These are the perfect shorts for a low key day - the only downside is that they wrinkle easily, but that's no big deal especially for running errands or throwing on over a bathing suit.  Yes I am constantly shopping at Old Navy but they seriously have the best deals for summer clothes.  Summer is only about three months and 5 days out of the week I cant wear shorts regardless so I tend make conscious choices in terms of price.
This sweatshirt is perfect for cooler days and nights, and I love that it has short sleeves.  I will be honest, I have also slept in it... it's just so damn comfortable!  The Loft is another one of my favorite places to shop - their items from Lou & Gray are my holy grail because they are all so practical and season-less!  They also have great items for work that do not break the bank! Back to the sweatshirt - stores tend to be cooler than the temperature outside especially while food shopping!  So, when running errands I like to add something a bit heavier than what I would wear outside,  we have all been in the dairy isle shivering because the outfit planned for the weather outside is nowhere near warm enough for the amount of cold air pumping out of the vents at the supermarket.
